Dr. Azad Moopen stresses on the need for a proactive approach to healthcare

In his keynote address titled ‘Healthcare: Proactive instead of Reactive through Technology’ at Arab Health 2019, he will discuss the increasing role of technology and innovation in preventive care

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – January 29 2019: Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder, Chairman & Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare, will deliver a keynote address at the Innov8 Talks sessions on the closing day of Arab Health 2019 on the value delivered through the proactive use of technology and innovation. This approach according to him will help shift the prevailing trend of episodic or acute care to proactive and preventative intervention which will define the future of healthcare delivery.

Ahead of the talk, Dr. Moopen said, “The future of healthcare will be defined by technology, innovation and knowledge-based interventions such as genetic screening, gene slicing, sensor or touch-enabled monitoring and automatic medication, to name a few. Wearables technology is also advancing at an incredible pace with trackers capable of alerting cases of cardiac arrhythmia or arrest to medical teams instantly. It is estimated that there will be as many as 830 million wearable devices in use by 2020. The growing need of healthcare globally is the control of non-communicable diseases and prevention of age-related phenomena like atherosclerosis. Instead of waiting for the disease to set in, there are now ways in which we could diagnose illnesses quite early, even in the fetus. It is only a matter of time when genetic manipulation can be achieved to avoid many of the diseases. Technologies like gene slicing and deletion is being used experimentally and can prevent many of the serious diseases.”

Dr. Moopen will also explore how the entire outpatient service model can now be made more convenient for patients from the comfort of their homes. Telehealth solutions can be explored as a medium for top doctors to reach a wider geographic reach and once the prescription is received this can be uploaded on online pharmacy portals for the home delivery of medicines. This approach will reduce the burden on hospital infrastructure facilities for easily manageable conditions.

He will discuss how remote monitoring of patients, coupled with facilities like constant access to doctors and a sensor-based alert system can ensure timely intervention and unwanted complications. Capabilities within monitoring of various parameters in healthy individuals and patients have revolutionized detection and intervention of calamities. People with a high-risk profile for certain illnesses are provided various types of monitors including surgical patches for detection of abnormalities as an early warning to take preventive action.
The detection of certain abnormalities at genetic level can support preventive measures to avoid future complications. Certain type of breast cancers and colonic carcinoma are examples of this where people pursue preventive surgery to avoid cancer. An often-cited example is that of actress Angelina Jolie who underwent bilateral mastectomy to avoid breast cancer as she had a genetic predisposition.

As part of Aster DM Healthcare’s strategy to meet patient needs and make quality care more accessible and affordable, Aster Chronic [email protected] service and monitoring system for diabetes and hypertension enables doctors to keep a regular check on their patients and proactively take measures in case any regular readings show abnormality. An Intelligent Health Service Platform, allows for remote glucose monitoring, remote blood pressure monitoring, real time feedback, interventions, and customized advice. Every patient that avails of the service is provided with a Bluetooth-enabled, wireless, sleek and advanced Blood Pressure machine and Blood Glucose Machine. The patients are then advised by the doctor on the frequency with which to take their blood pressure and glucose readings which are uploaded to a server using a smart app. These readings are constantly monitored by the Aster Chronic [email protected] team, and if they pick up any panic values, the patient is immediately contacted and remedial actions will be taken according to the advice of the clinician. Similarly, teleconsulting allows doctors to consult patients across geographies. Further to these digital facilities, the 800 Aster service is a mobile medical practice-offering available 24/7, 365 days in a year, at an individual’s residence, hotel or work place. Several hospitals within Aster DM Healthcare also use robotics in advanced surgeries.
