Aster Volunteers provides facelift to CDA Colony in Calicut.

First program in the state to adopt an urban slum colony and renovate into an independent and self-sufficient society.

The program cost was implemented by Aster MIMS Charitable Trust and sponsored by Aster Volunteers Kozhikode in association with NIRAV, Vengeri and Corporate of Calicut.

Kozhikode, December 26, 2019: Aster Volunteers in association with NIRAV Vengeri, Corporate of Calicut and Aster MIMS Charitable Trust has contributed in providing healthy and hygienic living to over 168 families. This has been possible through completion of Project BUCKET – a beautification initiative of CDA colony which includes families from poor financial backgrounds. The beautified houses were handed over to the respective families at an event organized in the city today.

The CDA colony was formed by the Kozhikode Development Authority around 35 years ago with the necessary facilities and amenities. The colony, constructed in a low lying area, eventually became prone to floods and land-sliding. Over the years, facilities provided by the authority started fading leaving the houses in poor, unhygienic conditions. In order to give it a facelift, Aster MIMS and Nirav initiated a program under Project BUCKET.

As part of this project, families were provided with facilities to encourage Organic Farming, Sustainable Waste Management and training programs on health and hygiene.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder – Aster DM Foundation, said, “People in the CDA Colony were living in very poor and unhygienic conditions. This in turn led to increase in number of people suffering from diseases and infections. Project BUCKET was a very noble initiative which has given these families a ray of hope. By facilitating organic farming and sustainable waste management this initiative has also made the families self-sufficient. I congratulate each and every volunteer who has contributed to the success of this project. We hope that we will be able to help more and more families in future through such initiatives”.

Over the years, Aster Volunteers have joined hand with Aster MIMS Calicut and together they have extended their support to the people of Calicut, multiple times.

In 2018, they collaborated with Calicut Corporation for the clean-up of the Canolly Canal, part of the West coast canal network of Kerala that was constructed more than 150 years ago. A seven member team provided medical aid and instructions on self-hygiene, to 100+ volunteers who were involved in the cleaning process at the time.

Aster Volunteers also announced the ‘Aster Homes’ project to construct homes for the victims of Kerala floods in Calicut. Currently, 5 homes are nearing completion in Mankavu, Kuttikattoor and Ikarapady, handovers of which are expected to be done by end of December, this year.
