Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is a newer technique based on an established treatment strategy for renal calculi, in which multiple lithotripsy emitters mounted on a conventional catheter deliver localized pulsatile sonic pressure waves to circumferentially modify vascular calcium.
A 75 year old patient who had acute coronary syndrome and unstable angina, had a stent delivered successfully through this technique, thereby relieving his angina and reducing the long term risk of mortality.
